Suggested Walking Tours around Killarney

Whether it is natural beauty, historical monuments or scenic views, the Killarney area has a lot to offer. Below are some fantastic walking tours you could take while enjoying the area:

Black Valley / Gap of Dunloe

One of the most well known walking tours frequented by keen walkers is the Gap of Dunloe. It is located near a narrow passage not too far from the famous Macgillycuddy's Reeks. This is a path that can suit a variety of walkers from the beginner right through to the highly experienced hill walkers/mountaineer. This is due to the vast land and variety of geography that it encompasses. Throughout the Gap of Dunloe (which stretches almost 7 miles long) you can walk along various lakes such as the Black Lake and the Coosaun Lake. The Gap of Dunloe is a very long and narrow walk but has proven to be hugely popular through the years due to the spectacular scenery that it presents and also the amount of activities available in the area. You can do everything from hiring ponies to hiring bikes. Or for the traditional walker you can of course enjoy the trail on foot. The Gap of Dunloe is steeped in Irish history and in proximity you can find many beautiful historical Irish sites like the Dunloe Castle and Ross Castle.

Corrán Tuathail (Carrantuohill)

Corrán Tuathail is one of the most famous mountains in Ireland, mainly for its size! It is the highest peak you will find anywhere on the Emerald Isle and at just over 1000m above sea level, it is a considerable walk/hike. This walk should only really be taken by experienced hill walkers who are used to rough terrain. There are different routes going up the mountain, with one of the more famous and difficult referred to as the 'devils ladder'. For the experienced and more advanced walkers that are looking for a challenge, Corrán Tuathail is ideal. For those that dare take on the challenge, the reward is absolute breath taking beauty and scenery along the way, and when you reach the top, you are literally at the very summit of Ireland!

Aghadoe and Fossa Way

For those really looking for something special on their walking tour you simply must try out the fabulousAghadoe and Fossa Way.From the magnificent medieval monastery on the mountain ridge of Aghadoe that surveys the Killarney Valley, you can walk down along Botharín na Marbh (referred to as 'the little road of the dead') before following the Fossa Way into the Cnoc na Rí estate and into Killarney itself. It is a relatively easy walk that all the family can enjoy and usually the use of mountain boots won't be needed (weather permitting of course!)

This is a great walk for the history lovers who will find plenty of monuments dating back to as far back as the 6th century. This walk is a hidden treasure and a little piece of history tucked away that is beautifully maintained and preserved today.
